He always visited his mother on Mother’s Day.
His job took him around the world. But It didn’t matter
which part of the world he was, he made it a point to go back to his parents’
house in Manchester.
Jack had come home every year to spend time with his
parents, especially with his mom. The last couple of years he had flown down
from China, which was half way around the world.
But this year he had to deal with something devastating, the
death of his mother.
At first, he wanted to cancel his trip and immerse himself
in work. This way he could avoid thinking about her. Going back home brought
back memories and only made things worse. But then, he thought of his
father who was alone, and so had come back home to visit him.
He reached out and rang the doorbell.
He remembered how his mother would rush to open the door
when she heard the doorbell. She always knew he would come home on Mother’s
Day.
Jack stood at the door, gripping the flowers. He knew she
would not come and greet him this time. So, with a heavy heart he waited. And
then he heard it.
His mother’s familiar footsteps rushing towards the door.
A surprised Jack, took a step back!
When the front door swung open, he expected his father but
there was only emptiness. There was no one to greet him. Jack stood there, perplexed. And then he
heard his mother’s voice.
“Jack! My son! I knew you would come home! Come on in”.
Jack felt a chill run up his spine. He looked around but
there was no one.
“Is that you ma?” he asked. “Where’s dad?”
“Your father is inside. Come on in,” said the voice. “Since
you have come, it will be just like the old days”.
Jack stood for a couple of moments, unsure of what to do.
But he never disobeyed his mother, and he knew she would never hurt him.
So, he stepped inside the house and the door slammed shut.
