Short Story - The Favourite Spot

Old Mr. George hurried across the park towards his favourite spot, his park bench. He loved to sit on the bench every evening and watch the world go by.
George being a creature of habit, had been sitting at the same spot for more than fifteen years!
The bench was the perfect spot for him. It was under a huge tree which provided him just the right amount of shade. The children’s play area was good distance away, such that their noise didn’t bother him. The bench was also at an optimum distance from all the evening walkers and joggers. Every evening Old Mr. George would settle down on the bench and thumb through one of his favourite magazines.
If someone else occupied the bench, George wouldn’t hesitate to ask them to find another spot, such was his fascination with that particular bench. If someone refused to move then George would throw a hissy fit, and then grumpily sit on one of the other park benches.
As George hurried along, in the distance he could see the behind of the bench. It seemed empty and a small smile appeared on his lips. But to his surprise, when he went near, he saw a small boy lying down on the bench.  A sudden anger rose inside George’s heart, as if something dear to him was snatched away, but he calmed himself down.
All is not yet lost he thought to himself. I only have to ask the boy to sit on one of the many other park benches.
Hey kiddo,” he called out to the boy.
The boy looked up at him and smiled “Yes”.
“Do you mind sitting on the other bench kiddo?” asked George.
“Actually, I DO mind,” smiled the boy.
The anger rose again in George, but he controlled himself.
“I like to sit here son,” he managed to mumble, “This is my favourite spot. Surely you are not stubborn like an old man like me?”.
He looked imploringly at the boy, but the boy simply smiled.
“Nice try old man. But I like this spot. Why don’t you look for another spot quickly and stop wasting both of our time?”.
Old George’s face turned red like a tomato. This little twerp has the guts to talk to me like this? How dare he?
For a second, he thought of giving the boy a whack with his walking stick but then he decided against it.
Cursing the boy under his breath, George turned around and walked to the next bench.
And just when he did that, there was a big crash, as the huge branch of the tree came crashing down on his favourite spot and on the boy.
George turned around and looked at what was once his favourite spot, now covered by the huge broken branch.  If not for the small boy, he would have been sitting there and would have been crushed by the branch!
What happened to the small boy? I hope he is not hurt! thought George.
And when George saw the boy, he got a huge surprise. The small boy was unharmed. The branch had simply fallen right through him—
But how is it possible? wondered George as he went closer to the boy to investigate.
The boy got up and waved out.
“My job is done. The spot is yours,” he smiled as he slowly disappeared.

Short Story - The Swing

Six-year-old Sarah had just moved into their new house in New Manchester. It was already a little late in the evening and while her parents were busy getting things arranged with the packers and movers, Sarah ran around the huge house. She opened the blinds of the bedroom window and when she noticed a playground a short distance away, she was overjoyed.
She opened the back door and ran outside towards the playground. If there was one thing, she could do all day, it was to swing.  There were two swings and both of them were occupied, by a small boy and a girl who seemed to be little older than Sarah. Both of them seemed to be enjoying themselves and when Sarah shyly approached the swings, they looked at Sarah and at each other.
“Hi I’m Sarah,” she smiled “What’s your name?”.
Both the kids kept swinging and the girl spoke up.
“I’m Dorothy. And this is my brother Simon,” answered the girl.
Dorothy smiled, but Simon didn’t seem pleased at all. He stared back at Sarah with an unwelcome look on his face.
“Are you new here?” asked Dorothy.
“Yes,” answered Sarah. “We just moved in here from across town. My dad got a new job here, so.”
“I don’t want to share my swing with HER?” Simon grumpily remarked.
“No silly, you need not share it,” Dorothy coaxed Simon.
She turned back to Sarah “He always acts like this whenever he sees a new kid on the block. Simon doesn’t like sharing,” smiled Dorothy.
“Yeah no problem,” smiled Sarah “although I would love to swing a little bit though,” she smiled.
Before Dorothy could answer Simon screamed in a fit of rage “You can swing in the morning. IN THE EVENING IT IS MINE AND DOROTHY’s”.
Sarah was a little taken back.
“OK. OK,” she murmured and took a step back.
Dorothy stopped swinging. She immediately felt bad for Sarah “I’m sorry about my brother,” she sighed. “He is sometimes moody. But you can play on the swing in the morning. In the evening he plays with it”.
“Ok,” sighed Sarah somehow managing a smile. She was little taken aback by Simon’s behaviour. He still looked at her, which his eyebrows furrowed up. His eyes seemed to have turned red, and he seemed like he would blow up any moment.
“Sarah child,” called out her mother from the house “Why don’t you come back home? You can play tomorrow in the morning.”
“Bye, see you tomorrow,” Sarah waved back at the kids and ran back home.  Only Dorothy waved back.
When she entered the house, she turned back and saw both the kids were enjoying themselves on the swing.
“Looks like we are lucky. Look at how close the playground is for you?” her mother remarked.
“I love it ma,” said Sarah. “I met both the kids too”. She pointed out to the kids, “The girl is Dorothy. And that crankerspuss over there is her brother Simon,” she said as she pointed the kids to her mother.
Her mothers face turned as white as a sheet.
“What kids are you talking about?” exclaimed her mother, “The playground’s empty”.
“Look ma,” exclaimed a surprised Sarah pointing to the kids, “look at the kids playing on the swings”.
Her mother glanced at the playground and hastily locked up the backdoor of the house and closed the window drapes. Because all her mother could see was a vacant playground and empty swings in motion, even though there wasn’t any wind!
